Copyright: TV and Radio Broadcasts

  TV and Radio

TV and radio broadcasts can be shown in classes or recorded for educational purposes without seeking specific permissions, under the statutory education  licence. Tabor pays an annual licence fee to Screenrights, the audio-visual copyright collecting body, which allows staff to make copies without seeking permission.

In general, the statutory licence permits you to copy:

  • any type of program, including movies, current affairs, documentaries and news as a broadcast received in Australia;
  • any amount of the chosen programs;
  • anywhere, at home or in your library;
  • from any channel, including free-to-air, pay TV, or radio;
  • broadcast material made available online by the broadcaster, including podcasts and vodcasts;
  • in any format, including physical video or stored digital copies;
  • from old copies, such as to update VHS recordings into digital format.

With the copies, you can:

  • show them in class;
  • keep them in the library as an ongoing resource;
  • store them on a network for staff and students;
  • email them to staff and students;
  • show them on an electronic whiteboard.

However, you cannot sell the copies for profit, give the copies to institutions not covered by a Screenright licence, or use them for non-educational purposes.

The Screenright licence does not cover sound recordings, TV or radio material recorded overseas, or copying from purchased, rented, or borrowed DVDs. Also, it does not cover material streamed online unless that material has been previously broadcast on a TV or radio channel.

You must label all the copies using Tabor Sceenrights Label, and an additional warning notice is required for copies communicated online.
